Yarn count is the numerical expression which indicates the fineness or coarseness of yarn. It is way
to expresses the yarn is thick or thin. According to Textile Institute, Count a
number indicating the mass per unit length or the length per unit mass of yarn.
The linear density
is expressed as mass per unit length .
Yarn
count can be described into two systems:
- DIRECT SYSTEM
- INDIRECT SYSTEM
DIRECT SYSTEM : The yarn count is the mass of unit length of yarn. Higher the count
coarser the yarn. This method is used for man made fiber.
By the following formula
count is measured.
Where,
N = The Yarn count
W = The weight of sample
L = The length of sample
l = The unit of length
w = The unit of weight
The following direct system are used:
- Denier
- Tex
Denier System :
Tex: The yarn number or count in the Tex system is the weight
in grams of 1000m or 1 km of
yarn.
Denier = weight in grams of 9000 meters length of yarn.
yarn.
Denier = weight in grams of 9000 meters length of yarn.
Tex System :
Tex: The yarn number or count in the Tex system is the weight
in grams of 1000m or 1 km of
yarn.
yarn.
Tex = weight
in grams of 1000 meters length of yarn.
INDIRECT SYSTEM : In this system the weight unit is fixed and
the length of the yarn varies as per its thickness .
- English count
- Metric count
- Worsted
English Count (Ne) :
The number of hanks
of 840 yards in one pound weight is known as the count of the yarn . It is also
known as cotton count and is denoted by Ne .
No. of Hanks ( Hank of 840 yards )
Count (Ne) =

Metric Count :
The number of hanks
of 1000 meters length in one kilogram weight is called the count of the yarn in this system . It is denoted by
Nm.
No. of Hanks ( Hank of 1000 meters )
Count (Nm) =
---------------------------------------------------------
1 kg weight
Worsted Count : It is defined as the number of hanks (560
yards) per pounds.
