Knitting

Knitting is the process of manufacturing of fabric by intermeshing of loops of yarn. The loops are also held together by the yarn passing from one to the next. The properties of a knitted structure are largely determined by the interdependence of each stitch to its neighbours on either side and above and below it. Knitted loops are arranged in rows, roughly equivalent to the weft and warp of woven structures. These are termed ‘courses’ and ‘wales’ respectively.

Rib knitted fabric
Rib knitted structure requires two sets of needles operating in between each other so that wales of face stitches and wales of reverse stitches are knitted on each side of the fabric . The simplest rib fabric is 1x1 rib. It is normally knitted with two sets of latch needles as shown in Fig. 3. As the face loops show a reverse loop intermeshing on the other side, 1x1 rib has the appearance of the technical face of plain fabric

on both sides until stretched to reveal the reverse loop wales in between. It is therefore a reversible structure. Rib has a vertical cord appearance because the face loop wales tend to move over and in front of the reverse loop wales, that is, the wales of the reverse loops are almost behind the wales of the face loops . Thus there are two planes of the rib structure – one showing face loop stitches and the other showing reverse loop stitches, and theoretically twice as thick and half the width of an equivalent plain knit fabric.

We produced the rib knitted fabric on flat V bed knitting machine and vary the loop length by adjusting the cam setting.
